Complementing Your Email Marketing Strategy with Text Message Marketing

Time and time again, email has proven itself as a successful marketing channel for almost all businesses. But every once in a while, it’s important – and often fun – to diversify marketing channels in an effort to re-energize current subscribers and to possibly convert new ones.

One of the latest marketing trends is marketing text messages, a viable marketing solution that can be complementary to the campaigns you currently have running. According to ‘Text Communication: The Next Generation of Business Communication’ compiled by SMS marketing software specialists EZ Texting, over 50-percent of consumers (54%) say they would like to receive promotions via text messages. However, despite the consumer demand for marketing text messages, only 11% of businesses send them.

Confused as to what a marketing text message is? You’ve likely received one before, whether it’s an appointment reminder or service notification. But many businesses are now utilizing text as a way to communicate coupons or discounts, customer service follow-ups, and sweepstakes or contests.

Knowing all that we do about how consumers use text messaging to stay connected in a quick and efficient way, marketing texts seem like a no-brainer for businesses looking to grab the attention of their followers. Unfortunately, many businesses are possibly missing a huge opportunity because they are unaware of consumer preferences:

  • 83% of consumers would like to receive appointment reminders via text but only 20% of businesses send them
  • 66% of consumers would like to receive service notifications via text but only 23% of businesses send them
  • 54% of consumers would like to receive promotions via text but only 11% of businesses send them

Text message marketing is an opportunity for businesses to quickly engage with consumers and, if needed, get a response such as an appointment confirmation or survey reply. 54% of consumers surveyed reported that they are frustrated when they can’t respond to a message sent by a business, so it will become more and more important for businesses to establish two-way texting in order to keep the customers’ preferences in mind.

As you evaluate your email marketing strategy and communication channels to reach your customers, consider integrating text message marketing into your campaign strategy to make more space for valuable email communication such as newsletters, product/service information emails, vital announcements, and more.
